Response to Today’s Tax Code Agreement

New York State took a meaningful step today toward the creation of a more progressive tax system that demonstrates values of justice, compassion and good work.

By requiring the wealthiest among us to pay their fair share, the plan will build public infrastructure and create jobs. However, much more needs to be done. Additional revenue-generating measures are necessary to prevent cuts to schools, services and the safety net.

Over recent months and weeks, a broad movement of labor, faith, and community (with Occupy at the forefront) joined together and took daily action to call for a fairer New York. Polls showed strong support for the Millionaire’s Tax. And yet, until today, there was little indication that these voices would be heard. New York’s people have reason to celebrate. The plan is not yet enough and much more public input is necessary, but we are being heard.

Sara Niccoli is Co-Director of the Labor-Religion Coalition of New York State.

The Labor-Religion Coalition of New York State, with a statewide staff and nine local coalition affiliates, educates and advocates for economic justice. In addition to partnering with 99 Percent NY, the coalition coordinates the Sweatshop Free Campaign, an Annual 40-hour Fast for Worker Justice and a Fair Trade Project.
