15th Annual 40-Hour FAST

Albany

Monday, March 1
Noon— Statewide Opening News Conference with Labor-Religion Coalition Co-Chairs, Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany Bishop Howard Hubbard, New York State United Teachers President Richard Iannuzzi and the Rev. Jim Reisner at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 85 Chestnut Street in Albany, NY. Parking off Chestnut Street.

12:20-1 PM— Procession to the Legislative Office Building to join a Senate Standing Committee on Agriculture hearing (scheduled for 10 AM-2 PM in Hearing Room A) on the Farmworker Fair Labor Practices Act. The committee is chaired by Sen. Darrel Aubertine (D-Cape Vincent), a bill opponent. Sen. Neil Breslin (D-Albany) a stong advocate for the bill is a committee member. [NOTE: The hearing schedule may require time or location changes. Please check back here before March 1.] Those who are able to stay may wish to wear their Justice for Farmworkers tee-shirt at the NY Farm Bureau rally on the Capitol steps, West Capitol Park from 3-4:30 PM.

Tuesday, March 2
11:30 AM - 1PM— March & Rally, part of the Immigrant's Day of Action in Albany organized by the New York Immigration Coalition. Support for legislation that strengthens protections for immigrant workers, especially the Farmworkers Fair Labor Practices Act and the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, is an important priority for NYIC. Look for the Fasting for Justice banner of the Greater NY Labor-Religion Coalition at the rally. .

Wednesday, March 3
10-11:30 AM—Panel discussion of faith leaders: How we approach recovery from the economic crisis, held in the upstairs gymnasium of the Sr. Maureen Joyce Recreation Center, 340 First St. in the West Hill section of Albany. The public is invited to join members of AUMS/ AmeriCorps for this special program. "People of faith address the economic crisis"— News Alert [PDF]

11:30 AM-1 PM— "Fasting & Acting for Good Jobs" lunch & program. Whether or not you participate in the fast, please join the Labor-Religion Coalition of the Capital District for a breaking-the-fast meal. Free will donation. If you plan to enjoy the lunch (provided by the Emmaus Intervention Project with Recent Immigrants and Refugees), please send an email, so we will have enough. The event follows directly the panel discussion and will also be held in the upstairs gymnasium of the Sr. Maureen Joyce Community Center, 340 First St. in the West Hill section of Albany. 7 PM—Ecumenical Prayer Service at the First United Methodist Church, 53 McKinley Avenue, Endicott. The theme of the service will be "Recommitting to Economic Justice for All." Co-sponsors include the Broome County Council of Churches, BCCC's Peace with Justice Committee, the Social Justice Network of the Wyoming Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, Clergy for Peace, People of Faith for Health Care Reform of Greater Binghamton, the Justice and Peace Resource Center of the Catholic Community and Citizen Action of New York-Binghamton and City Council member Lea Webb. Ithaca
Saturday, March 6
5:30-7:30 PM— Hungry for Justice 40-Hour FAST Kick-off Dinner. Unitarian Church of Ithaca, corner of Buffalo and Aurora Streets. Sponsored by the Tompkins County Religious Task Force for a Living Wage (a joint project of the Tompkins County Workers' Center, Catholic Charities of Tompkins & Tioga Counties and area religious leaders). Participants are invited to bring food for themselves and their families. In addition to dinner, there will be a short program featuring workers from recent Workers' Center campaigns.

During the 40-Hour FAST, participants are asked to reflect on how theri economic decisions (buying, selling, investing, hiring) serve human dignity and the common good, especially the rights of workers.
