WHEREAS, the 2006 Representative Assembly passed a resolution asking: that NYSUT build support for Fair Trade through an education and awareness campaign; that NYSUT encourage the purchasing of Fair Trade products by its 525,000 members and the schools within which they work; that NYSUT encourage all of its locals to show solidarity and support for these workers by pledging to purchase Fair Trade products especially, coffee, tea and chocolate whenever possible; and that NYSUT create a permanent task force to partner with the New York State Labor-Religion Coalition and to deal with promoting and supporting Fair Trade and international solidarity; and
WHEREAS, leading by example is one of the most effective methods of causing others to emulate one’s actions; and
WHEREAS, locals and their members are strongly influenced by their NYSUT officers and staff: therefore be it
RESOLVED, that NYSUT negotiate with the agents of facilities that house future NYSUT functions to serve only Fair Trade coffee and tea if possible; and be it further
RESOLVED, that NYSUT encourage and facilitate the use of Fair Trade products within the various offices and departments at the headquarters building; and be it further
RESOLVED, that upon renewal of the contract with the management of the NYSUT cafeteria, NYSUT negotiate for the vendor to use Fair Trade products whenever possible; and be it further
RESOLVED, that NYSUT promote and facilitate the use of Fair Trade products in the regional offices, and encourage the regional staff directors to request Fair Trade products be used at union meetings within their regions; and be it further
RESOLVED, that NYSUT reaffirm its commitment to educate and promote the purchase of Fair Trade products by its locals and their members.
