What’s with the ‘Religion’ in the ‘Labor-Religion Coalition’? The Labor-Religion Coalition is a non-profit organization that neither adheres to nor promotes the religious doctrine of any faith group. The word ‘religion’ in the name of the organization refers back to the founding of the Labor-Religion Coalition in 1980 when labor, religious, and community volunteers coalesced to focus on economic justice for workers at a time when large numbers of plant-closings signified the negative impact of globalization on New York State workers. The beliefs of labor and religious groups have historically intersected on the topic of economic justice. The Labor-Religion Coalition spotlights this intersection: its work is driven by a belief in the dignity of work and the right to organize and collectively bargain. Free Trade vs. Fair Trade: What’s the difference? Free Trade is a trade model based upon the principles of: • Comparative advantage Fair Trade is a trade model based upon the principles of: • Fair prices In an ideal world, Free Trade would increase the overall production of goods and services around the world, thereby improving the lot of the majority of the world’s population. However, Free Trade in its present-day incarnation does not take into account the market failures often caused by Free Trade policies and the resulting unbridled abuse of labor and the environment. Fair Trade is a solution to the market failures produced by Free Trade policies. Fair Trade empowers consumers to choose goods and services produced with fairness and justice. While the Free Trade model ignores the damage done by its policies to low-income workers and the environment, the Fair Trade model takes as its objective the defense of workers’ rights and the protection of the environment.
