Labor Seder

Many resources exist to bring leaders and members of the organized Jewish and Labor communities together at Pesach to retell the Exodus from Egypt and its relationship to the struggles of working people to improve their lives, the lives of their families, coworkers and their communities. The story of Passover is rich with imagery and meaning for Jews and for those in organized labor as well.

For an online listing of Labor Seders across the USA and to order print copies of a special Labor Haggadah, contact the Jewish Labor Committee.

"It is all too easy to talk about slavery at our Seder as if were just part of our past and not our present. Unfortunately, modern-day slavery exists. Although the exploitation today is often not called slavery, the conditions remain the same. In fact, there are more slaves now than there were in the trans-Atlantic slave trade." "For we were strangers" is a Pesach supplement created by the Jewish Funds for Justice on the theme of immigration.

The Jewish Council on Urban Affairs makes available several holiday resources including an Immigrant Justice Haggadah, an Immigrant Justice Freedom Haggadah and a short Tu B'Shevat seder focused on contemporary justice issues.

In New York City, Jews for Racial and Economic Justice creates Haggadah Inserts that are inspired by and coordinate with the organization's campaigns. The Passover Resources section of the web site includes materials in support of Domestic Workers United, for example. The Labor-Religion Coalition of New York State is a partner in this campaign.
