GUIDELINES FOR AFFILIATION
January 2009

TO BE A LOCAL CHAPTER OR AFFILIATE OF THE NEW YORK STATE LABOR-RELIGION COALITION A GROUP IS REQUIRED TO:

1. Affirm the mission and goals of the Labor- Religion Coalition of New York State (www.labor-religion.org)

2. Request in writing to become a local chapter/affiliate of the Labor-Religion Coalition of New York State. Send request to Brian O’Shaughnessy, Labor- Religion Coalition of New York State, 800 Troy-Schenectady, Road, Latham, NY 12110-2455. Click here to send your request.

3. Organize a decision-making body (Steering Committee or Board or other) that meets regularly and is open to all persons willing to work toward the goals of the group.

4. Select at least two Co-Chairs, one from the religious sector of the community, one representing labor. Some chapters/affiliates have chosen a third Co-chair representing the community-at-large.

5. Take special care when selecting issues or campaigns for attention, education and action. Chose issues of economic and/or social justice that build participation in the coalition.

6. Keep in mind that the statewide Labor-Religion Coalition is an incorporated organization with IRS 501(c)3 tax-exempt status (and whose mission is charitable and educational). Therefore, local chapters/affiliates are asked to stay clear of partisan political actions, especially any endorsement of any candidate from any political party.

7. Be aware that the Labor-Religion Coalition is affiliated with the national organization Interfaith Worker Justice (www.iwj.org) and participates in some of its activities, such as the Wage Theft Campaign and Labor-in-the-Pulpit/Bimah/Minbar.
