STATEWIDE MISSION STATEMENT

THE LABOR-RELIGION COALITION OF NEW YORK STATE:

AFFIRMS each person’s God-given dignity and each person’s right to a fair share in their labor’s productivity;

WELCOMES the participation of all persons and organizations, especially religious and labor communities, in promoting economic and social justice;

BELIEVES ethical principles and faith must be linked with action;

CELEBRATES religious and labor heroes and martyrs who challenge abuses of power and sacrifice for the common good;

RECOGNIZES that economic activities which diminish human value or the environment are immoral.

THE COALITION SEEKS TO ACHIEVE THIS VISION BY:

EDUCATING about human rights/responsibilities and the essential contributions of labor and religion to the building of community;

ADVOCATING for change in practices and policies that contribute to a life of poverty for millions of adults and children;

INCLUDING music and art in religious-labor conferences, gatherings, and struggles;

PROMOTING socially responsible businesses;

ORGANIZING campaigns and projects that offer individuals and organizations concrete ways to act with and for those exploited by harmful economic priorities;

BUILDING solidarity with workers—in the US and globally—who are acting to achieve justice in the workplace;

LINKING statewide and local initiatives;

JOINING with other groups and organizations to address issues such as corporate accountability and the income/wealth gap.
